Interview Sebastian Doring (Lovebirds / Knee Deep)1) Hi Sebastian, how would u describe yourself in five words as an artist?? Unorganized, handsome, drunk, talented cook. 2) What’s your musical background? The police was my first big love. Then towards the end of the 80ies i got into stuff like De La Soul, Soul to Soul, Deelite which put me in touch with samples of the good stuff like Roy Ayers, Quincy Jones etc. These days i´m mostly listening to an internet jazz station and a hiphop station. 3) How did you start your career as a musician and a producer and which artists have influenced you the most? Actually started producing because a guy who stole my girlfriend 20 years ago began producing. At that time my fav producers were mark kinchen MK, Masters at Work, Todd Terry. generally i think all the music i liked had an influence on me but mostly jazz, soul, funk, bossa nova .. This is the harmonic world i live in. 4) You are well known as a member of the famous Knee Deep duo as well Kiez Kidz and your solo project Lovebirds . How can we describe your musical style? I think its rather harmonic because thats what musci means to me. so called "deephouse" these days is basically a congaloop, some shakers and an 808 bassdrum - I tend to look at music a bit more oldfashioned and try to create moods and emotions with stuff like chords and harmonies. 5) How does your normal week look like? And how many hours per day do you spend in the studio? I spend maybe 6 - 8 hours per day in the studio but quite unorganized. If the weather is good i rather go to a public pool and work after that (or not). 6) You just released your new Lovebirds track ‘Want you in my soul’ on Winding Road and it’s already on top of every international charts. What can you tell us about this new release? And why do we have to buy it? Like most of my stuff the track is pretty old. i think i did the instrumental at least 3 years ago. Then i happen to get in contact with the singer stee downes and sent it to him. When i listened to his first draft i was pretty overwhelmed. he really understood the vibe and did exactly what the track needed. Not sure why i put it aside then and left it for a while but maybe a year ago i finished it and then we wanted to keep it a bit and release it with my album on winding road. But things didnt really work out and then we decided to just put it out as a single. everybody i played it to was instantly in love with but i rather not expect too much so i was happily surpised about the reception of it. why to buy it? Well, i think its a beautiful tune, one that stands out of a lot of the other random stuff out there … Its deep, has a beautiful vocal with beautiful lyrics! 7) In your career you played at legendary places all over the world and shared the dj box with the biggest names in dance music. But what has been your most memorable gigs until now on? I have a pretty bad memory (dj alzheimer) and theres been really quite a few great nights, most of them were in smaller places, some really small, like a really cool place in st petersburg that holds maybe 100 people and unfortunatly closed recently. Bar Druzhba was the name! 8) You are a well respected dj/producer with a long and successful career. Do you have any advice for those who are starting? Take keyboard lessons and dont limit urself with limited knowledge! 9) What is the most important record in your collection and why? God i am not really a fan of superlatives! maybe it's "Summer madness" by Kool and the Gang … These rhodes chords and everything else is just magical and will never sound dated! 10) If you have the opportunity, with who would you like to work with? Quincy Jones or Stevie Wonder, i love their songwriting! 11) What is the highlight in your career and what would you hope for to achieve in the future? Maybe the highlight is that i managed to pay my bills for such a long period with something i can hardly consider a job! 12) The final question; What can we expect of Sebastian Döring in the near future? Theres quite a few things comin out now … A pumpim raw deephouse track on liebedetail called "the beast", then a really nice 3 track EP on teardrop, then a track with a singer from poland named novika called "this time" on toolroom and a new ep on freerange. Besides that i am working on an album with a singer from Tokyo which will be less dance music and rather listening / pop music. Actually quite excited about this, i think this could become the highlight of my career ;)
