Miguel Migs interview1) Hi Miguel, how would u describe yourself in five words?? Spontaneous, open minded, easy going. 2) What’s your musical background? My parents were hippies, so I grew up going to concerts and listening to all types of great music, classic rock, soul, reggae, blues… I first taught myself how to play guitar when I was around 12 I think. Then I went on to write and play music in bands as a teenager. When I got into electronic music I dove into it all the way experimenting with sequencers and synths creating ‘dance’ music inspired by all different styles. 3) How did you start your career as a musician and a producer and which artists have influenced you the most? After I began experimenting with producing electronic based music I was fortunate enough to be offered lots of opportunities remixing various artists as well as creating tracks for various labels. I have always taken inspiration from all types and styles of music. Im influenced by everything from steely dan, erykah badu, prince and sade to steel pulse and gangstarr… 4) You are well known as a dj as well a producer. How can we describe your musical style? Deep, soulful, funky, dubby, electronic music with hints of jazz, r&b, soul and reggae. 5) How does a normal week of Miguel Migs look like? And how many hours per day do you spend in the studio? When im not traveling and am at home half my day’s are spent working on the computer just trying to keep up with emails and music!... my emails are always super backed up with so many music promos and demos, gig offers to look at, record label stuff, and friends connecting, ETC… its really tough to keep up with it all.. And of course I will try to spend as much time in the studio as possible crafting new music and making edits… beside all that, I enjoy trying new restaurants, hangin with friends, checking out a concert and catching a movie here and there… pretty normal stuff. 6) Could you tell us something about your own Salted Music label. What was the reason you started it and what are your requirements for new tracks to sign? Salted music is just for fun. It’s a side project that allows me to pick up and release new music from various artists. Its like a home base and I feel the label is necessary right now in the industry. We try and maintain a diverse sound with our releases while keeping things rooted in the deep, soulful and funky underground dance music. 7) In your career you played at legendary places all over the world and shared the dj box with the biggest names in dance music. But what has been your most memorable gigs until now on? Of course the most memorable gigs are always those when you really connect with the crowd and vibe. those moments are magic and so powerfully inspiring.. Its all about sharing those moments and spontaneously creating a vibe that connects people on a deeper level and brings them together through the music and energy. These gigs happen here and there, and when they do they remind me of why I still do this. I have been lucky enough to have these moments many times all over the world through the years, from Europe to Australia, Canada, all over the States, Brazil and Asia. 8) You are a well respected dj/producer with a long and successful career. Do you have any advice for those who are starting? Stay true to yourself and your passion. Its so important to love what you do and create and share music that you feel.. rather than just trying to become some wealthy big dj/producer its important to be a good person and stay true to what you feel and believe. that will resonate with people and be authentic. Trends come and go, but individuality and quality song writing stands the tests of time. 9) What is the most important record in your collection and why? Too many to name than just one! 10) If you have the opportunity, with who would you like to work with? The list is very long! I would love to write a song with erykah badu, jill scott, Maxwell, d’angelo, norah jones, Jennifer Hudson has an amazing voice... the list goes on… 11) What is the highlight in your career and what would you hope for to achieve in the future? The biggest highlight has been when people tell me how much my music has meant to them on a deeper level, and how it has helped them get through hard times in life. That’s “highlight” enough for me to be able to touch peoples lives in a real pure way and is truly inspiring. 12) The final question; What can we expect of Miguel Migs in the near future? I' ve just finished my new full length album, and that will be released in September. The album is called “outside the skyline” and features a wide range of artists and styles. Including evelyn champagne king, meshell ndegeocello, bebel gilberto, lisa shaw, aya, capleton, freddie mcgregor, half pint, georg levin and sonny j mason. The styles range from deep and soulful to disco flavors and some reggae. Its definitely more of a true listening style album to enjoy rather than for the dancefloor. I hope people enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating the work and songs.
