Enjoy!!

Mr. V Interview

1) Hi Victor, how would u describe yourself in five words??

VERSATILE, UNPREDICTABLE, PASSIONATE, BALANCED & CREATIVE

2) What’s your musical background?

HMMM I don’t think I have one?, I honestly love all types of music, I’m keen to many things.

3) How did you start your career as a musician and a producer and which artists have influenced you the most?

I first dabbled in music making in 2003/2004 via Alix Alvarez, he showed me the Akai MPC2000 and I was immediately hooked from day 1, I dj’ed and enjoyed that but when it came to creating music it just dragged me in hard!!! Alix was the only producer and artist that really influenced me to produce cause he made it look so simple, I mean, I frequented many Luie Vega Sessions but I was always afraid of that big mix board in those fancy studios that when I saw Alix create a track on this small machine I got hooked!.

4) You are well known as a dj as well a producer. How can we describe your musical style?

Production wise I would have to say soulful right now, man I just love music, I cant say what I’m gonna be doing in the next 10 years man, sky’s the limit but I’m musically open.

5) How does your normal week look like? And how many hours per day do you spend in the studio?
My week starts with taking my 2 year old to day care then it’s all about new music week, I jump on my yahoo and clear out my inbox then I check for promos and send feedback, update my traktor for about 4 hours then proceed with heading to the studio, spend about an hour or 2 transferring my vinyl collection to 16 bit .wav format, then if I’m in the mood I get to work on new music, real studio work is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only depending on how I feel and that can last many hours as long as I’m feeling what I’m doing.
6) Could you tell us something about your own Sole Channel label. What was the reason you started it and what are your requirements for new tracks to sign?

The label is run by me and my partner Alix Alvarez and we started the label in 2004, we did it cause we wanted to build a franchise and create music under our own terms, no rules, no exceptions, no middle people, no judgements, just straight music from our heart and soul, basically to create our own world.
We signed a lot of tracks in the past but slowed down on that recently as we wanted to really get back to the core of who we are.

7) In your career you played at legendary places all over the world and shared the dj box with the biggest names in dance music. But what has been your most memorable gigs until now on?

I would say my 1st time in South Africa was mind blowing in 2006 for the SAMC music conference, Playing in Bahrain was mind blowing as well.

8) You are a well respected dj/producer with a long and successful career. Do you have any advice for those who are starting?

Just be yourself man……PLEASE don’t copy anyone’s style cause it will def lead you no where, people want change, they want different they wanna see something that stands out musically, people don’t want more water down versions of what’s hot at the moment.
Know your history in music, you be surprised on how far you can really get when you know where it came from.
Learn to have thick skin cause opinions are like assholes….everybody has one and you will be dealing with them alot.
Last not least…BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING!.

9) What is the most important record in your collection and why?

My 1st release on my label & my 1st album…It will always remind me of how I got started NUFF SAID!

10) If you have the opportunity, with who would you like to work with?

Kanye West, John Mayer, MF Doom, Lionel Richie, Sade & Her Band, Sting, Henrik Schwarz, Osunlade, Michael Mcdonald, Stevie Wonder & Prince.

11) What is the highlight in your career and what would you hope for to achieve in the future?

Highlight was completing my first album and making sure my 2nd DESTROYS IT WITH WAY BETTER MATERIAL!!.

12) The final question; What can we expect of Mr. V in the near future?

My 2nd Album, My free mixtape that will showcase my hip-hop skills, Miss Patty’s album and countless rockin new music.
